Happy Stencil Sunday

Here's a fun card using a couple of the gorgeous Lemurian Garden stencils, designed by The Ink Pad's friend Linda Edkins Wyatt, for StencilGirl. For the record, these are one of our favorite releases of this year!

This design features the Lily 4x 4" Stencil and a bit of extra foliage from the 6" Tulip Stencil. The flower is colored with blended Distress Oxide Inks that range from Chipped Sapphire at the base of the bloom, Mermaid Lagoon in the center, and lightening out to Speckled Egg at the top. The foliage is Twisted Citron, toned down just a bit with Antique Linen. The inks are applied over a base of randomly torn and layered text papers, which are old enough to be interesting, but without much aged patina, so that there's a nice bright contrast between the inks and the paper.

A good way to give a custom, handmade feeling to pretty much ANY stencil or stamped design is to add stitching: either by hand, using embroidery floss; or even just a simple machine stitched border. Both add texture and interest. In this case I used a simple backstitch inside the foliage, in a coordinating green shade; and some peacock blue french knots at the top of the blossom. In both cases, I took my cues from Linda's design, so that I would enhance the existing shapes and not distract from them.

Check out the other Lemurian Garden Stencils in the online store, and rest assured that the Pansy and Spiral stencils will be back in stock soon!
